Science

Intent

At Nancledra School, our Science curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, deepen understanding, and equip children with the knowledge and skills they need to make sense of the world. In line with the aims of the National Curriculum, and through structured progression, we ensure that all pupils:

  • Develop secure scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding, following a carefully sequenced curriculum that builds knowledge cumulatively over time.
  • Understand the nature, processes, and methods of science by engaging in a wide range of scientific enquiries that help them explore, question, and investigate the world around them.
  • Gain the scientific knowledge needed to understand the uses and implications of science, both today and in the future, recognising how science shapes our lives and our planet.
  • Build essential scientific enquiry skills, enabling them to observe, measure, compare, classify, predict, and draw conclusions with increasing accuracy and independence.
  • Communicate scientific ideas clearly, using ICT, diagrams, graphs, charts, and written explanations to present their findings in a systematic and scientific manner.
  • Develop respect for materials, equipment, and living things, understanding the importance of working safely and responsibly.
  • Experience enjoyment, curiosity, and excitement in scientific discovery, fostering a lifelong interest in science.

The Spark Curriculum supports this intent by providing a rich, knowledge‑led sequence of learning. It introduces children to key scientific concepts, vocabulary, and big ideas in a logical order, ensuring that new learning builds securely on what has come before. This approach helps pupils make meaningful connections, retain knowledge, and develop a deep understanding of scientific principles.

Children have weekly Science lessons throughout Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. In the Early Years, scientific learning is woven through play, exploration, and direct adult instruction as children investigate the natural world and begin to develop early scientific thinking.
