At Nancledra, it is our intention to ensure pupils are able to read fluently, with deep meaning and confidently across a range of subjects, developing a love of reading and books and preparing them for the next stage of their education.
We encourage all pupils to read widely across both fiction, non-fiction and poetry.
Phonics
We teach phonics and early reading through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised. This is a systematic synthetic phonics programme where children are taught in small, carefully sequenced steps.
Children read fully decodable books that are precisely matched to their phonics knowledge, ensuring they experience success and build confidence as readers. They read books they can decode independently, supporting fluency, accuracy, and understanding.
We place a strong emphasis on making a successful start to reading. We work closely with our feeder preschools and nurseries and begin teaching reading from day one, through daily phonics lessons and frequent opportunities to share and enjoy books. We know that a strong early start sets high expectations, supports rapid progress, and promotes a lifelong love of reading.
